EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY

Learning Attachment Skills comes in many shapes and forms.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Bark (2011) explains EAP as focusing on the human mind, feeling and soul, a journey that a client ventures down as they partner with a horse to learn about themselves and the world around them. EAP is a therapeutic practice using horses as the primary tool for practitioners to achieve specific treatment goals for their clients (Barnstable, 2022; Robinson, 2022). EAP is solely an 'on-ground' practice that does not focus on horseback riding; arguably, riding requires more emphasis from the counsellor to provide instruction and direction (Bark, 2011). Stapleton and Grimmett (2021) explain EAP as a “collaborative process where a licensed mental health professional works alongside an equine specialist and therapy horse/s to address psychotherapeutic objectives” (p. 3). The idea behind EAP is to encourage the client to open up and talk about what is currently occurring, focusing on being in the moment while also being encouraged to reflect and express various thoughts or feelings they may be experiencing (Bark, 2011; Stapleton & Grimmett, 2021). When horses approach clients, it is a very affirming experience for youth as they believe they are worthwhile; the horse actively seeks them to build a relationship (Coffin, 2019).

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a therapeutic practice that uses horses as partners to help clients learn about themselves and the world around them. It is an on-ground practice that encourages clients to open up and express their thoughts and feelings. EAP is a collaborative process between a licensed mental health professional, an equine specialist, and therapy horses to achieve specific treatment goals.

Registration is for the full 8-12 session curriculum-based program. If more time is requested after 12 sessions, we will reevaluate and proceed.

Participants under 18 will be encouraged to wear helmets. We will no longer have helmets for public use, so the students must supply their own. If participants under 18 choose not to wear a helmet while participating in EAP programming, parents/guardians must sign a waiver.

Please watch the weather forecast. Sessions will be rescheduled if the highways are unsafe to travel, storms are expected, or winds are strong. Please note that sessions will be cancelled and rescheduled within 24 hours of the forecast. This will be determined in a conversation with Stephanie and the participant.

Saskatchewan weather tends to fluctuate with temperatures and driving conditions. Please be mindful of dressing appropriately.

When you arrive for your first session, please have completed copies of our registration package. This package will be emailed to you when you sign up for sessions. Please take the time to fill this package out online. After that, I'll have copies made out for you to sign at our first session. Please remember that if you finish your paperwork before session one, we will begin immediately with the horses. If paperwork needs to be done, it will be done in the first session before stepping into the arena with the horses.

Please be on time for your session. For example, if you are 20 minutes late, you will NOT get an extra 20 minutes to finish your session. If your time is 1—2 pm, we start at 1 and end at 2.

Sessions typically last 45–90 minutes, depending on how they unfold. Each session is generally designed to be an hour in length. I often advise clients that if they are in a state of flow, I will refrain from interrupting them as we approach the hour mark. If a client is ‘done’ and it's only been 20 minutes, we strive to respect the client's choice in feeling ‘done’ for the day. Sometimes, things may seem minor or irrelevant, but they may be very big and emotional to a client. We respect your decision to end early, just as we respect your time needing ‘a few extra moments.’

All classes must be paid upfront and in full to confirm your time and date. You can pay for these classes in cash, via e-transfer, or by cheque.

Funding for programs can be found through various programs and supports. Social Services, cognitive disabilities strategies, and SaskAbilities are just a few. Please reach out if you need support financially. If you submit a claim through insurance, please talk to your insurance agency to confirm that you will be reimbursed for services. I am happy to help you in this process if you need me. I am registered through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) # 11247512 for insurance purposes.

Participants will not receive refunds for programming. You agree to pay for your entire program (8-12 sessions) with the understanding that you will commit to the full program.

Specified letters of support or progress reports being requested will be subject to a $50 surcharge.

As per Saskatchewan legislation and mandate, there are currently no restrictions on programming at Success Ranch: D.S.L. Therapies, Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy. The team and I want you to experience self-growth on your terms. Please do what makes you feel the most comfortable when you arrive.
