Talk Therapy - Common Questions . . .
How do I know if I need therapy?
One does not require a crisis to initiate therapy. Numerous individuals will pursue therapy support to acquire insight, develop coping skills, or enhance their mental well-being. Many individuals will pursue therapeutic treatment while experiencing overwhelming emotions that disrupt their daily routines. Intense emotions such as sadness, overwhelm, a plateau, anxiety, loss, trauma, and difficulties in relationships frequently motivate individuals to pursue therapeutic assistance. If your emotions or habits are disrupting your daily life, talk therapy may be a beneficial option to assist you in navigating this period of your life.
What happens in a talk therapy session?
Typically, talk therapy sessions encompass discussions of one's thoughts, emotions, concepts, challenges, anxieties, aspirations, and experiences related to the past, present, or future. As a therapist, I may pose questions to further stimulate your reflection, go deeper into your concepts, or motivate you to identify the solutions that will be most effective for your circumstances. We will engage in a dialogue on your chosen topic, facilitating a seamless exchange that empowers you to guide the discussion towards the most important elements. I can offer feedback, suggest coping skills, or simply provide a non-judgmental ear to listen and allow you to express yourself. The objective of our talk therapy sessions is for you to acquire insight into your thoughts while potentially cultivating healthier coping mechanisms for everyday challenges you experience.
How long does talk therapy take to work?
This is all dependent upon you! What are your objectives, the challenges you are addressing, and the structure of our therapeutic plan? Some individuals find contentment after only a few sessions, which is okay, while others derive advantages from ongoing therapy. The optimal time frame is determined by what seems appropriate for you. Nevertheless, while addressing the core of a problem, tackling specific concerns, or navigating various life events, it is essential to recognize that development is not linear; however, maintaining consistency in your therapy sessions is crucial.
Will I be judged by my therapist?
Engaging with me guarantees a judgment-free environment. My role is to guarantee that you feel supported and understood. If you ever experience feelings of shame, guilt, or criticism from your therapist, it is quite OK to address the matter. It is completely acceptable to pursue a different therapist if you feel any discomfort in your existing therapeutic relationship. A gentle reminder that therapists are human and can err as well. As a therapist, my role is to assist you in achieving the goals you have while gently encouraging you to step beyond your comfort zone; nevertheless, I am not here to condemn or shame you for expressing yourself during your most vulnerable moments.
How do I find the right therapist for me?
When searching for a therapist, prioritize those who specialize in your particular issues or challenges (e.g., anxiety, depression, grief, goal setting, parenting, etc.). It is essential to identify a therapist whose approach aligns with your needs. Ultimately, trusting your intuition will be the most reliable criterion for determining whether a therapist is suitable for you or if you should continue searching for one who connects more profoundly with you as an individual. Finding the right therapist might require time; however, it is undoubtedly worthwhile in the end.

What does Talk Therapy look like with Stephanie Lockhart?
When beginning talk therapy programs with myself, I have a few things to consider...
If, after our first session of getting to know each other, feeling out the energies and the vibes, you do not feel that you connect or wish to continue sessions with me, that is 100% OK!
Recognizing the critical importance of connection and selecting an appropriate therapist for our health and well-being, I provide all initial sessions at no charge. Experiencing comfort with your therapist during moments of vulnerability is essential to the therapeutic relationship.
I provide both online and in-person talk therapy sessions. If we are online, you will send me an email, we will determine a suitable time and format (for instance, 7 PM on Wednesday via text), and then we will proceed with planning from that point. If you desire in-person sessions, I will travel to your preferred location for optimal comfort. This may be McDonald's, your residence, or your workplace—any location where you wish to talk.
Our meetings maintain a degree of confidentiality. It is important to note that while our discussions and background will remain confidential, there are four specific circumstances under which confidentiality may be compromised. These circumstances include: If you are experiencing harm, wishing to harm another, contemplating self-harm, or granting me permission to disclose this to a trusted individual.
We won't press the topic if you are not prepared to talk about certain issues. When you are ready, I will be ready, and the necessary conversations will occur. Some of our discussions will be lighthearted, while others will be profound, intense, and intellectually stimulating. If you are uncertain about topics to discuss during our sessions or how to initiate our chats yet recognize the need for talk therapy, do not be concerned! I have you covered! Suppose you arrive at a session uncertain about how to start or what topics to address. In that case, I will gently initiate the conversation by inquiring about your day, recent positive experiences, and any challenges you have encountered. We will then move on to the elements that want to be shared and continue with a constructive discussion about what this topic means to you personally.
If you wish to schedule a talk therapy session with me, please email me to arrange our initial appointment. Before our initial session, I will provide you with an intake questionnaire to complete. This will provide me with insight into your therapeutic objectives and outline the parameters of talk therapy.
